Better Schools Step 3: A Holistic Education

Kids don’t grow up to be successful adults just because they pass SOL tests. They do so because of a combination of traditional book learning, life skills instilled from a young age, and beneficial connections that provide them opportunities.

Richmond Public Schools should have the goal of providing this holistic education that gives our children the necessary knowledge to succeed and build wealth.

This holistic education will provide general life skills like vehicle maintenance, cooking, and robust financial and wealth building education. Through this hands-on learning, the kids will also learn valuable problem-solving skills. As robotics technology advances, problem-solving skills are going to the be the number 1 requirement for well-paying jobs.

Another aspect of this life education will include how to succeed and advance in the workplace. This means job application, resume, and interview training. It also means extensive mentorship programs and business partnerships to help build beneficial networking connections.

Finally, the school system will provide an alternative path for those that do not wish to go to college. There are many well-paying careers in the trades, and I have had many business owners talk about how they are desperate for people with the skills to do the work.

The idea behind this is to not only graduate well-rounded individuals but to set them up with the opportunities to thrive and build wealth that they otherwise may not have.
